We live in the age of technology: cell phones, televisions, computers, calculators, and more. Having so many devices in our daily lives can be a great help, but we can’t always let the machines do the heavy lifting...especially when it comes to math! It’s always going to be important to have good, strong math and problem solving skills.

This week’s word problem challenge offers the opportunity to practice foundational elementary school math skills such as addition and subtraction. Go ahead and give it a try. 

Question: One robot can lift and carry 900 pounds. A second robot can lift and carry 1,800 pounds. If the robots work together, can they lift a boulder that weighs 2,500 pounds?

Solution: Together, the robots can lift 900 + 1,800 = 2,700 pounds. Since 2,500 pounds is less than 2,700 pounds, the robots can lift the boulder.
