Now is the Time to Plan for Summer Math and Stop Learning Loss

Dec 17, 2020 | Littleton
I know summer seems like a long ways off and I also know kids have lost a ton of content in math this year from last spring to now.

Maybe your child has good grades this year (grading criteria have been lowered to compensate for the challenging year we've all faced). Maybe they didn't. Grades definitely don't tell the full story with regards to math understanding even during the best of times.

I CAN guarantee both from what I have seen personally and from research conducted this fall most students will be missing 6-12 months of math skills going into the fall of 2021.

We don't know for sure where any child is in math without assessing them (our in-depth assessment shows very specifically what skills and concepts are weak or missing) but I am pretty sure we have a whole group of kids who are going to struggle with high school math and possibly miss out on scholarships, grants and opportunities good math skills offer.

I also know Mathnasium of Littleton is going to be full this coming summer whether we're back up to full capacity or still restricted to limited seating due the coronavirus. We always have a big surge of enrollments for the summer, and if we are restricted to the number of seats per session, that will make getting everyone who wants in-center help, challenging.

Summer is time for fun, but it’s also when during a "normal" year kids lose up to 3 months of their math skills. Called “the summer slide,” this seasonal learning loss results in lower self-confidence and a lower chance of school success in the fall. For more 7 years now we’ve been the authority on math education for grades 2-12 here in Littleton.

This year, more than ever, working on math over the summer is going to make the difference between success (or not) next fall and beyond. It's particularly important for kids transitioning from primary to secondary grades, elementary to middle school and middle school to high school but very good for every grade.

In only 30 or 40 sessions at Mathnasium, your child can make up some of their lost ground and start the school year strong. Kids love our face-to-face instruction and fun activities. And if your child has plans to go on vacation or attend camp, no problem! Mathnasium fits with almost any schedule.

Keep your child from backsliding this summer! Make a $200 /child deposit by December 31, 2020 and you'll hold a seat for your students AND you'll save an additional $200 off our summer rates!

Happy Holidays!
