Mathnisium featured in Wall Street Journal for developing a new approach to teaching fractions.

Instead of relying on memorization and repetition, the approach at Mathnasium focuses on helping children develop deep mathematical understanding through a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written exercises.

Denominators, for example, are "the name of the fraction," rather than simply "the bottom number," This helps kids understand why they can't add 1/2 and 1/3 and get 2/5. Tutors explain, "One apple plus one apple is two apples. One banana plus one banana is two bananas. But one apple plus one banana isn't two banapples." So, the conclusion is that the students needs to have a common denominator before they can add the numerator.
