Child Falling Behind in Elementary Math? 4 Steps Massapequa Parents Can Take to Help

Oct 8, 2026 | Massapequa Park

Math skills build from one grade to the next, so an early response gives a child the best chance to catch up.

Students in our home state of New York learn under the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, which connect each year's skills to the year before. This is why we recommend that parents understand the curriculum and leverage the local resources for math support as the first steps to helping their children recover academic performance and their relationship with math.

Today, we'll walk through four practical steps for parents of K–5 students in the Massapequa Union Free School District, from the first conversation with your child's teacher to the local programs and professional support available to Massapequa families.

Step 1: Start With a Conversation With the Teacher

Your child's classroom teacher is the best first source of information about where a math difficulty begins. Teachers see how your child works through problems every day, and they can tell whether a concept was missed recently or earlier in the year.

Massapequa's elementary schools use i-Ready Classroom Mathematics, and the district's mathematics page links to family resources that explain how the program works. Reviewing those resources before a conference can help you ask more specific questions about your child's progress.

To round out your list, you can also ask your child's teacher about:

  • Where your child's iReady results place them compared to grade-level expectations

  • Which specific skills triggered the small-group instruction, and how those skills connect to what's coming later in the school year

  • Whether the gap is showing up in one area, like place value or basic fact fluency

  • How your child's iReady scores have changed since the last checkpoint, growing, flat, or slipping

  • What you can reinforce at home between now and the next checkpoint

Step 2: Identify The Math Gap

Math builds on itself, so a wrong answer on today's homework doesn't always come from today's lesson. That means your child may be missing a concept from an earlier lesson that never fully settled.

State learning standards can help you pinpoint where that earlier concept sits. Each state sets standards that describe what students should learn by the end of every grade, and school districts build their math curriculum around them.

In New York, those goals come from the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, and the Massapequa School District's mathematics page links to them directly. The state's Parent's Guide to the Next Generation ELA & Math Learning Standards explains how standards, curriculum, and classroom instruction work together.

Some grade-level transitions cause more trouble than others, and knowing where those pressure points sit can help you catch a gap before it grows.

  • Grades K–2: Struggles here usually trace back to place value, understanding what a digit is actually worth depending on its position.

  • Grades 3–4: This is where multiplication and division move from memorized facts to multi-step reasoning. If your learner is still shaky on basic facts, they may struggle once problems require two or three operations in sequence.

  • Grades 4–5: Fractions are the biggest pivot point in elementary math. Whole-number rules stop applying, a larger denominator means a smaller piece, not a bigger one, and that reversal trips up even students who were confident with whole numbers. Keep in mind that fraction understanding develops in stages, and gaps that seem small in fourth grade can compound if they're not addressed directly.

You may be helping with homework at home, but without knowing exactly where the gap is, it can be hard to know what your child needs to work on. That’s where structured support can make a difference.

Step 3: Explore Local Math Programs and Resources

Our area offers several local programs that help children rediscover their interest in math outside the classroom. Many of these programs place students in peer groups, where children can build on their natural curiosity and love of learning.

Depending on what your child enjoys, these programs can offer extra practice or a new way to explore math outside regular school hours:

Step 4: Consider Professional Support

Professional math support gives your child regular time with a trained math instructor who follows a plan built just for them.

If your child's difficulty seems temporary, occasional help may be all they need.

When the same gaps keep coming back over several weeks or report cards, consistent support can help them.

Families can see the benefits of that consistency in a few key ways.

  • Each session builds on what your child already knows, so time goes toward new learning.

  • Your child returns to a concept as many times as needed until they fully understand it.

  • The instructor tracks progress over time and adjusts the plan before a small gap grows.

This is exactly what our teaching approach at Mathnasium is designed around. Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment that identifies skill level, learning goals, and learning style, and from there, we build a personalized learning plan that adjusts as they progress.

Sessions happen consistently in a caring and fun group environment, so your child can build on what they already know instead of starting from scratch each time. This develops the skills that may have been challenging during elementary school and prepares them for the next grade.

We help elementary school students build the math skills and confidence to advance in the classroom and beyond.

Every student comes in carrying a different mix of skills, gaps, and pressure. That's why the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach, adapts to each student individually and at their own pace.

Here is how it works:

  • Assessment and Personalized Learning Plans: Each student starts with a diagnostic assessment that identifies current skills, including knowledge gaps and learning style. From those findings, we build a personalized learning plan tailored to their goals, whether that means catching up on a specific grade-level skill, keeping pace with this year's coursework, or getting ahead before the material advances.

  • Teaching for Understanding: Our specially trained tutors use natural language and a mix of verbal, visual, mental, tactile, and written techniques so each concept lands before we move forward.

  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Our tutors know when to offer support and when to let students work through a problem on their own. That balance builds independence and confidence.

  • An Engaging and Fun Learning Environment: Sessions include games, earned rewards, and consistent celebration of progress.

The results speak for themselves:

  • 94% of parents report an improvement in their child's math skills and understanding

  • 93% of parents report improved attitude toward math after attending Mathnasium
