At Mathnasium of Mohegan Lake, our specially trained tutors work with preschool and kindergarten students to develop their number sense and mathematical thinking. We create a warm, supportive environment where young learners feel safe to explore, ask questions, and discover how math works.
Our tutors understand how our youngest students learn best. We use hands-on activities, visual tools, and playful instruction to make math engaging and meaningful. By meeting each child where they are, we help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve them throughout their school years and beyond.
We use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help even our youngest students develop a deep understanding of math. Our Numerical Fact Fluency approach helps students fundamentally understand addition and subtraction facts, building lasting foundations from the very beginning.
By making math fun and engaging, we cultivate a love of learning while also developing independence and confidence. Our tutors combine playful techniques with proven instructional methods to help young learners develop math muscles early, setting them up for success as they progress through elementary school.
Each young learner's Mathnasium journey begins with a gentle diagnostic assessment designed to feel like play. This helps us understand their current skills, interests, and learning style. Using these insights, we create a personalized learning plan that introduces concepts gradually and builds on what they already know.
Our tutors provide caring, patient instruction that adapts to each child's pace and needs. Whether working with number recognition, counting, pattern identification, or basic operations, we ensure every session is positive and encouraging, helping young students build both skills and confidence.

We’ve created our early childhood program specifically for young children who are developing foundational skills, including number sense and mathematical thinking.
We understand this group’s unique needs and adjust our teaching approach to each child’s developmental stage and learning style.
Everything we do in our early childhood program is designed to set young learners up for success in elementary school and beyond. Through hands-on activities and playful instruction, we help students build essential skills, including:
Number recognition and counting
Pattern identification and sequencing
Basic addition and subtraction concepts
Shape recognition and spatial reasoning

Early problem-solving strategies
Every concept is introduced gradually and naturally, to keep young learners interested, engaged and eager to learn more.
We make early math engaging by meeting young learners where they are on their math journey and using methods that feel like play. Our tutors use hands-on manipulatives, visual aids, games, and interactive activities that capture children's natural curiosity and love of play.
Sessions are designed to be fun and encouraging, full of positive reinforcement.
We celebrate small victories and create a warm environment where children feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and try again. By making math feel like an adventure rather than a chore, we help young students develop a deep love of learning.
Early childhood tutoring at Mathnasium of Mohegan Lake looks and feels different from tutoring for older students, and that's by design. Sessions are shorter, more playful, and built around hands-on activities that develop foundational number sense naturally, without relying on worksheets or abstract concepts.
Social-emotional support is woven into every session, helping young learners grow their independence alongside their math skills. Our tutors are trained to recognize developmental milestones and adapt to each child's attention span, interests, and learning style, with one clear goal: to create early math experiences that build lasting confidence and enthusiasm.
Absolutely! Our personalized learning plans are designed to meet young learners exactly where they are, including those who are ready to explore beyond typical preschool or kindergarten math.
For advanced young learners, we introduce more complex concepts gradually, always making sure understanding is firmly in place before moving forward. Our goal is to keep math both challenging and enjoyable, so curiosity stays alive and confidence keeps growing.
The session length needs to follow young learner’s attention span and developmental needs, so we typically recommend shorter, more frequent sessions to keep young children engaged and make consistent progress.
During the enrollment process, our Education Specialist will work with you to determine the ideal session frequency and length based on your child's age, attention span, and learning goals.
Absolutely! We help preschool students build the foundational skills they need to enter kindergarten with confidence.
In New York, kindergarteners are expected to count and recognize numbers, understand basic concepts of addition and subtraction, identify shapes, and develop early number sense. Our early childhood program can focus on these exact skills through hands-on activities and playful instruction.
By developing number sense, counting skills, and mathematical thinking early, we help students feel prepared and excited as they begin formal schooling.
Yes! We support kindergarten students in mastering the skills they'll need for success in first grade.
Aligned with the New York Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, first grade builds on kindergarten foundations with addition and subtraction within 20, counting sequences to 120, foundational place value, and early measurement concepts.
We help kindergarteners build their current skills while introducing concepts they'll encounter next year at a developmentally appropriate pace. Our personalized learning plans ensure each child is ready for the increased expectations of first-grade math while maintaining confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
Yes, Mathnasium of Mohegan Lake offers our youngest students both in-center and online tutoring.
Our live, face-to-face online sessions are designed to be engaging and interactive for young learners, using digital manipulatives and activities that capture their attention.
However, very young children may gain more from in-person teaching, and we're happy to help you decide which format might work best for your child.
Both in-center and online tutoring deliver the same personalized learning plan, supportive environment, and caring instruction. For younger learners, however, in-center sessions can provide extra advantages through hands-on manipulatives and more direct interaction.
We recommend talking with our team about your child’s learning style and needs to determine the best fit. Many families find that in-center sessions are especially effective for building focus and engagement in preschool and kindergarten students.
Our assessment for early learners is designed to feel more like play than a test, creating a relaxed and engaging experience. It allows us to understand your child’s number sense, comfort with math concepts, and unique learning style.
Based on these insights, we develop a personalized learning plan that meets your child where they are, builds on their strengths, and introduces new concepts at a natural, encouraging pace.
