Happy International LEGO Day!

Today, January 28th, is International LEGO Day. LEGOs are amazing toys that stretch the mind into all sorts of creativity and joy. Building towers, new worlds and homes for all of the LEGO people are just a few ways to have fun with Lego.

Below are a few fun facts about LEGO from Bricks McGee:

  • LEGO was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932. The founder’s family still own the company!
  • The first LEGO theme park, LEGOLAND, opened in Billund, Denmark, in 1968.
  • LEGO produce around 60 billion LEGO bricks each year.
  • The name “LEGO” comes from two Danish words, “leg” and “godt”, meaning “play well”.
  • The plastic LEGO brick was first patented in 1958 (and in 1961 in the USA).
  • Over 318 million tires per year are made – 870,000 per day! LEGO is the world’s largest tire manufacturer.
  • LEGO’s motto is “only the best is good enough”.

LEGO can also be a fantastic tool when learning the foundations of math. Use them in counting, multiplication, skip counting, fractions, and even geometry. Your students won’t know they are learning so much because they will be having too much fun!
