Why Students Struggle With Algebra Even When They Understand the Math
One month into the school year, some students understand the math but still struggle with homework and tests. Here’s why both understanding and fluency matter.

The first marking period is almost over. What is your child’s math telling you?
By mid-October, we're well into the school year. Homework, quizzes, and tests are starting to paint a clearer picture of how our children are doing in math.
Maybe homework is taking longer than expected. Maybe your child understands the material at home but struggles on tests. Or maybe the grades look fine, yet you're still noticing some hesitation or frustration.
And sometimes, everything looks great!
Either way, as the first marking period comes to an end, there's a question worth asking:
Not just “What grade is my child getting?” but “How strong is the math underneath that grade?”
Good Grades Don't Always Tell the Whole Story
A child can earn good grades while still carrying gaps from earlier math concepts. Another child may understand the material but lose points because of calculation mistakes, organization, or lack of confidence.
And for students already struggling, the challenge is that math keeps building. New concepts are introduced whether or not the previous ones have been fully mastered.
That's why it's worth looking beyond the report card.
At Mathnasium, we use assessments to understand what a student already knows, where foundational gaps exist, and what they're ready to learn next. From there, we develop an individualized learning plan that helps students build stronger math skills and confidence—not simply spend more time on their current homework.
A Good Time for a Math Check-In
MCPS has a grading and planning day on November 2, with no school for students. It's a natural checkpoint as families prepare for the next marking period.
Here are three questions worth asking your child:
What went well in math this quarter?
What topics were difficult or confusing?
Is there anything you still don't feel confident about?
Sometimes a simple conversation reveals more than a report card.
The next marking period is a fresh start. But it's much easier to move forward when the math foundation underneath is strong.
Don't wait for a disappointing report card to discover the gaps.
