Every year on March 14 (3/14), math lovers around the world celebrate Pi Day—a day dedicated to the famous mathematical constant π (pi). At Mathnasium of Park City, we love any excuse to celebrate math in a fun way, and Pi Day might just be our favorite!
Whether you’re a math enthusiast or just love a good slice of pie, Pi Day is a great opportunity to explore the wonder and creativity of mathematics.
What Is Pi?
Pi (π) is the number that represents the relationship between a circle’s circumference and its diameter. No matter how big or small the circle is, that ratio is always the same: approximately 3.14.
But here’s where it gets really interesting:
Pi is an infinite number, meaning its digits continue forever without repeating.
The first few digits are:
3.1415926535…
Mathematicians have calculated trillions of digits of pi—and they’re still going!
Fun Facts About Pi
Here are a few fun Pi Day facts to share with your kids:
- Pi has been known for over 4,000 years. Ancient civilizations like the Babylonians and Egyptians used early approximations of pi in their calculations.
- Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988. Physicist Larry Shaw organized the first celebration at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
- Pi Day is an official holiday! In 2009, the United States Congress recognized March 14 as National Pi Day.
- March 14 is also Albert Einstein’s birthday. Yes, Pi Day shares a birthday with Albert Einstein!
- There are competitions to memorize digits of pi. The current world record holder memorized over 70,000 digits.
- Why pie? Because “pi” and “pie” sound the same, many celebrations include actual pie—one of the most delicious math traditions around.
