Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month
April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month! Discover fun, easy ways to bring math into your everyday life—whether you're baking cookies, riding in the car, or shopping for groceries.
It’s that special time of year when we come together to celebrate the educators who help shape our students' lives—Teacher Appreciation Week! At Mathnasium, we’re proud to support teachers all year long, and this May, we’re putting a spotlight on all the ways they go above and beyond.
In the words of Henry Brooks Adams, “Teachers affect eternity; no one can tell where their influence stops.” Every day at Mathnasium, we team up with your child’s classroom teachers to help them succeed. We’ve seen the creativity and compassion teachers bring to their work, often under challenging circumstances. That dedication deserves some serious celebration!
💐 Craft a Card for Your Teacher
We’re inviting all students to create personalized cards at the center this week—just one small way to say “thanks” to a great teacher. You can also decorate one at home with our printable template.
🎁 Gift Basket Giveaways
Know an amazing teacher? Nominate them to win a gift basket from Mathnasium! Learn more about this opportunity by asking a staff member next time you’re in the center!
📝 Team Teacher Shoutouts
We asked our team to share a memory of a teacher who changed their lives. Check out some of their stories here:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite math teacher is Mr. G. who taught me Algebra 2 at Thomas Dale High School. Mr. G was my Algebra 2 teacher back in my sophomore year of high school. I’d been struggling with math for years and was almost ready to give up entirely. But with a little help from my best friend, Mr. G convinced me to start attending his after-school tutoring sessions. We spent many hours working through the same concepts, but then, one day, something finally clicked. It was like everything I’d been confused about in math suddenly made sense. I’ll always be grateful to him for showing up every day — even when I was the only student signed up — and for working with me so patiently. Thanks to him, I not only passed his class with an A, but every math class since!

My favorite teacher is Ms. Melanson, who taught AP European History at Bishop Ireton High School. Ms. Melanson was the first teacher to treat me like a grown up. She taught me how to read history like an academic. To this day I have never had a better teacher.
-Meadow, Mathnasium of Mechanicsville
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My most impactful teacher was Madame Norwood, who taught French at Western Harnett High School. Madame Norwood allowed me to be an in-class French tutor in the 9th grade, because the school wouldn't allow 9th graders to take French 2. I went to her the first day of class, explained the situation, and excelled in all of her classes. I was able to graduate with a special award in French and an offer to go to a school in Denver to become an international translator.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite teacher in high school was my band teacher Mr. Davis. I had him for several music classes throughout high school, and he was also in charge of our school's marching band so I spent a lot of time around him all four years. He was a very insightful, and thoughtful teacher, but was also very approachable as a person. Many of us would hang out in his office before school started just because he was fun to be around. A lot of my best memories from high school are tied up in band, and the environment that Mr. Davis helped create played a big role in that.

My favorite teacher, Mrs. Wyman, was an educational support teacher who worked with me throughout my elementary school years. She was always kind and patient with all of her students and always strived to help her students understand materials in a way that made the most sense to them at an individual level. After I graduated from VCU, I worked as a substitute teacher at my old elementary school and I had the pleasure of getting to work with her. The experience of working with her and the other amazing teachers at Swift Creek Elementary School helped me become the educator I am today.

The teacher who had a biggest impact on me is Mrs. Leighty, my 11th grade AP Calculus teacher. Mrs. Leighty made calculus so much fun. Sitting in her class every other day was usually my favorite part of the day. She taught things well, challenged us, and helped us succeed. At the same time, she made every student feel special.

Let’s fill this week with gratitude, kindness, and plenty of teacher love. To every educator—we see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you!
