3 Reasons for Boca Raton Students to Start Math Support Early in the School Year

Oct 14, 2026 | West Boca Raton

Last year, 63% of Palm Beach County students finished on grade level or higher in math. That means more than one in three ended the year below grade level, and those gaps don't reset when a new school year begins.

Now that the fall round of math testing is behind them, families have a first look at this year's math skills. For Boca Raton parents, the weeks before midyear testing are the best time to act, while most of this year's new math is still ahead.

Today, we will talk about three reasons to invest in math support early in the school year and how a personalized approach can help, whether your child needs to revisit earlier skills or is ready for more challenging work.

1. Early Support Makes Math Gaps Easier to Spot and Close

Math gaps at the start of the school year usually trace back to last year's material, and early support can target those skills before new lessons build on them.

Classroom lessons follow a set schedule, so new topics arrive whether or not students are ready for them. If your child is still unsure about fractions, for example, ratios and percentages in later units will be harder to learn, and the gap can widen as the year goes on.

Even students who finished last year on track can return with gaps, since some skills may slip over the summer, a pattern also called the summer slide.

Your child's fall scores on the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) are one of the clearest ways to spot those gaps.

  • What FAST is. The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is the state's math progress monitoring test. Florida students in grades K–8 take it three times a year, and each test aligns with Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards.

  • What the score report shows. Each report breaks math into broad skill areas, so you can see which ones need additional instruction and support.

  • Where to find the scores. Your child's results are in the Florida Statewide Assessments Family Portal, and the state's family report guides explain how to read them.

Florida law requires schools to begin math intervention for students in kindergarten through grade 4 as soon as they identify a substantial deficiency. If your learner is in grades 5–8, or has smaller gaps at any grade, that requirement doesn't apply, so the next step may rest with you.

In that case, starting early matters even more. Without required intervention from school, gaps can take longer to close, and extra practice this fall gives your child more time to rebuild those skills.

2. Early Support Builds Confidence

The first weeks of a new grade shape how children see themselves as math learners, and early support helps them start the year feeling capable.

Researchers who followed sixth graders through one school year found that students who performed better at the start of the year felt more confident, both at the beginning and at year's end.

Confidence, in other words, tends to form early and carry through the year, and it's also linked to your child's grades.

In a study of middle and high school students, researchers asked students in October how they saw their own math abilities. Those answers predicted their final math grades, even after accounting for the grades they had earned the year before.

For your child, the way they feel about math by October or November can be linked to how their year ends.

Early support gives your child a place to ask questions and work through difficult skills while the material is still new. Each skill they master shows them they can handle the next unit. That way, confidence builds from the start of the year.

3. Early Support Helps Students Who Are Ready for More Challenge

If your child already does well in math, early support can help them go further. Students who score high across skill areas on their fall test may be ready for work beyond their grade level.

In Palm Beach County, these students may join the district's Accelerated Mathematics Plan (AMP), which covers more than one year of math in a single school year.

  • AMP3. Third graders cover all third-grade math standards plus half of the fourth-grade standards.

  • AMP4 and AMP5. Fourth graders cover the rest of fourth grade and all of fifth grade. Students who succeed in AMP4 move on to sixth-grade math in fifth grade.

Early support looks a little different depending on where your child is with AMP.

  • If your child is already in AMP: The first few months are especially important. Lessons move at a faster pace, so early support helps your child keep up before the work becomes harder to manage.

  • If your child hopes to join AMP: Fall is a good time to ask their school how placement decisions are made. Once you know the criteria, early support gives your child time to build the skills they need.

How Personalized Math Support Helps Your Child Early in the Year

Early math support helps most when it starts from what your child already knows and adjusts to how they learn. Personalized support does this by first finding out which skills your child has mastered and which still need work.

If you've already reviewed your child's fall FAST report, it gives you a useful starting point to share.

Your child's learning style matters too. Some students understand a concept once they see it drawn out, while others need to work through it with hands-on materials. Tutors who can explain the same idea in more than one way give your child a better chance to understand it.

Personalized support lets your child move to a new skill once the current one makes sense or spend more time on concepts that still need work. One student might take an extra session on equivalent fractions, while another who already understands them moves on to adding fractions.
