Ask three Cincinnati parents how math is graded at their child's middle school, and you might get three different answers. One district still hands out A's and B's. Another rates kids on a 1-4 scale tied to specific skills. A third blends the two, translating classroom rubrics into a familiar letter grade at report card time.
That's because Ohio doesn't set one statewide grading system for classrooms. Local school boards decide how their district grades students work, so the report card in your hand can look completely different from the one your neighbor's kid brings home, even a few miles away.
That distinction changes how you should read a report card. A 'C' means something different depending on whether it's an average of test scores or a measure of how close your child is to meeting a specific standard.

Many suburban Cincinnati districts, including Mason, Sycamore, and Lakota, still rely on the traditional point-based system that produces a familiar A through F letter grade.
Every piece of work in this model carries a set point value. Teachers track points across:
Daily warm-ups and classwork
Homework checks
Quizzes
Unit exams
At the end of each quarter, teachers add up every point students earn and divide that total by the points possible. That calculation produces one overall percentage, which then converts into a letter grade.

You can get an easy-to-read grade snapshot inside portals like ProgressBook, PowerSchool, and Infinite Campus. For example, one overall percentage sits next to "7th Grade Math," showing exactly where your 7th grader stands at a glance.
That single number can still hide plenty of detail. Take a B, or 82%, as an example. It might mean your learner has geometry fully mastered but still needs help with fraction division, and the report card won't show which is which.
Under this grading model, consistent classwork performance rewards students most. Not every Cincinnati district works this way, though. Some districts measure progress differently, building report cards around specific skills instead of a running point total.

Several Greater Cincinnati middle schools, including select programs in Cincinnati Public Schools and Princeton City Schools, use a standards-based system that grades student work on a 1-4 scale instead of traditional letter grades.
Rather than folding every assignment into one running point total, this model scores how well your student masters specific grade-level math concepts, one skill at a time.
Here, you won't find a percentage like 85% on an individual assignment. Teachers score each piece of work on a 1-4 rubric tied directly to a state standard, such as:
The rubric produces clear, specific feedback. Teachers can point to exactly which skills a student has mastered and which ones still need practice, rather than folding everything into one blended number.

Under the standards-based system, gradebooks like ProgressBook, PowerSchool, or CPS Focus look completely different. Instead, these portals display a checklist of individual standards where you can see at a glance which skills your middle schooler has mastered and which ones still need work.
Districts using SBG also separate work habits from academic mastery.
Homework completion, participation, and punctuality show up as their own category, distinct from the math score itself. That keeps the subject grade focused purely on what students understand, not on how they behave in class.

While most of us grew up with traditional letter grades, many schools now track specific math skill mastery instead.
In Greater Cincinnati, some suburban districts, including Milford Exempted Village Schools and select middle programs in Forest Hills Local Schools, bridge that gap with a Hybrid Grading Model.
For example, students complete daily assignments, quizzes, and projects scored on the 1-4 SBG rubric. At the end of each quarter, the school's software converts those rubric scores into an overall percentage, then translates that percentage into a familiar A-F letter grade on the report card.
This model gives your child skill-by-skill feedback throughout the term while still producing a letter grade for transcripts and high school preparation.
You get both views inside portals like Infinite Campus or ProgressBook. By clicking into an individual assignment, it reveals a 1-4 rubric score tied to a specific math standard. It also shows one overall letter grade next to "7th Grade Math", for example, or whichever grade level applies to your student.
Districts program their portals to map 1-4 rubric scores into equivalent percentage ranges at the end of the term. That conversion happens in three steps:
Each standard earns its own score. Throughout the quarter, middle schoolers work through 10 to 15 specific math standards, such as Solves One-Variable Equations, Interprets Data Displays, and Understands Ratios, each with its own 1-4 rubric score in the gradebook.
The portal averages every score. The software pulls all those rubric scores together and calculates one average for the subject, say a 3.2 overall.
That average maps to the ranges below. The table shows how each average translates into a percentage and a final letter grade.

You should focus on the individual rubric scores rather than the final letter grade alone. If your student holds a B, they might carry 3.5s in algebra concepts but a 2.5 in fraction division. That gap points directly to the skill area needing practice before the next unit test.

Almost every middle school traditional and hybrid system splits the gradebook into two categories. Teachers weigh these categories differently to prioritize understanding over daily compliance.
Summative Assessments (60%-70% of the final grade): Unit exams, end-of-module tests, cumulative midterms, and major math projects. These measure what your child has learned at the end of an instructional unit.
Formative Practice (30%-40% of the final grade): Daily homework, warm-ups, exit tickets, and quick check-in quizzes. These measure how your child is learning during daily practice.
This weighting marks one of the biggest adjustments for families transitioning out of elementary school. In the early grades, completing and turning in daily homework often carried enough weight to secure a top grade.
In middle school, because summative exams account for up to 70% of the total mark, a student who earns 100% on every homework assignment can still see their overall grade drop if they struggle on unit tests. Daily homework builds the muscle, and summative tests are where students show their strength.
