How to Ace Exam Season: Study Tips for Success

Dec 30, 2024 | St. Albert

Exam season is just around the corner, and if you haven’t started preparing yet, now is the time! At Mathnasium, we believe in not only teaching math but also coaching students to develop the right mindset and study habits. Learning how to learn is a skill that transcends math and helps students succeed in all areas of life.

To help your child tackle exams with confidence, here’s a step-by-step guide to preparing for math finals.

1. Start with Your Exam Day and Work Backwards

  • Understanding your exam’s exact date, time, and format is critical to crafting a realistic study plan. Begin by marking the exam day on your calendar. Then, break down the remaining days into study blocks, and schedule when and what you will study. It’s important to:
    • If there are areas where you feel less confident, allocate more study time for those topics.
    • For each study session, set a specific goal, like “review quadratic equations” or “complete 20 practice problems.”
    • Starting early will prevent the temptation to cram, which often leads to stress and a lower retention rate. Working backwards from your exam allows you to see how much time you have and how to divide your study sessions.

2. Review Notes & Create a Study Cheat Sheet (2 Weeks Out)

  • Dedicate 1–2 hours per unit to summarize key concepts into a condensed cheat sheet. Break the material down into these four categories:
    • Concepts: What are we doing and why? What problem are we solving?
    • Formulas/Processes: Which formulas are needed, and how do we use them?
    • Explanations: What do the variables and notations mean?
    • Examples: How is this applied? What types of questions are answered?
  • Write notes in your own words as if you were explaining the material to someone else. This helps solidify understanding.

3. Practice Exams & Revisions With Notes (1 Week Out)

  • Start practicing with exams using your cheat sheet, textbooks, and notes.
  • Pay attention to:
    • Mistakes you make and why. Add these notes to your cheat sheet for future reference.
    • Concepts or questions you don’t understand. Mark these and revisit them the next day.
  • Ask your Mathnasium instructor for clarification—we’re here to help!

4. Simulate Exam Conditions (2 Days Out)

  • Take a practice final in a quiet space, mimicking actual exam conditions:
  • Work without notes or distractions.
  • After completing the exam, take a break and review your answers with fresh eyes.
  • Identify any errors, mark the test, and focus on challenging areas.

5. The Day Before the Exam

  • Bring any last-minute questions to your Mathnasium instructor.
  • Do one more practice exam or revisit a previous one.
  • Stressing out the day before the exam can hinder your performance. Instead, take a break. Engage in a relaxing activity like listening to music, going for a walk, or doing some light reading.
  • Eat a healthy meal, relax, and get a good night’s sleep.

6. The Day of the Exam

  • Review your condensed notes and examples.
  • Go over past mistakes and remind yourself how to avoid them.
  • Take a deep breath, stay calm, and trust your preparation. You’ve got this!
