Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: An alligator starts life with 80 teeth. When an alligator tooth wears down or falls out, the alligator grows a new one. How many teeth has an alligator had in total if it has replaced each of its teeth 3 times?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: A frog croaks 1 time when a storm is 1 kilometre away. When the storm is half of a kilometre away, the frog croaks 2 times. When the storm is a third of a kilometre away, the frog croaks 3 times. How many metres away is the storm when the frog croaks 5 times?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Three loaves of stale bread is enough to feed 8 adult ducks or 16 ducklings. How many loaves of bread are needed to feed 6 adult ducks and 12 ducklings?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: A heron is fishing in a pond that has 3 carp, 4 bass, and 5 trout. Each fish is equally likely to be caught, and the heron swallows every fish it catches. What is the probability that the heron will catch a carp first and then a trout?
