Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: Liza sells 2 bunches of violets for 6 pennies. If each bunch has 6 violets, then many violets cost a penny?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Henry teaches language lessons. His most expensive lessons cost 60 pounds, and his least expensive lessons cost 1 shilling. If 20 shillings make 1 pound, then what is the range in language lesson prices? Give your answer in pounds and shillings. (HINT - What is the meaning of "Range")

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Clara, Freddy, Henry, and Liza are all sitting together on a sofa. Clara is sitting next to Henry, and Freddy is not. Clara and Freddy are both between two people, and Liza is not. Liza is to the left of Henry. From left to right, in what order are they sitting?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: It’s 9:31 AM and Alfred is running late for his wedding. He runs 500 metres to catch a taxi, which takes him 12 kilometres to the church at an average rate of 30 kilometres per hour. If Alfred makes it to the church exactly on time at 10:00 AM, then what is his average running speed per second from 9:31 AM to catch the taxi?

Grades 5 and 6: Our Mathletes at this grade level worked hard at solving the problem posed this past week. Inaya submitted the correct solution and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.
