Problem of the Week for September 6th to September 10th

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Sergeant Stubby was the most decorated war dog of World War I and reportedly received 11 medals for his service. Chips was the most decorated war dog of World War II and reportedly received 3 medals for his service. How many more awards than Chips did Sergeant Stubby receive?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  In New York City’s Central Park, there is a statue of Balto, the sled dog who helped deliver medicine in the middle of a blizzard to Nome, Alaska and saved the town from a dangerous diphtheria outbreak. Balto arrived in Nome on February 2, 1925. The statue of Balto was erected on December 17, 1925. How many days passed between Balto arriving in Nome and his statue being erected?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Man Ray, Fay, and Battina were dogs featured in work by the famous photographer, William Wegman. Battina’s photos are in 18 fewer than double the number of books Fay’s photos are in. Fay’s photos are in 1 more than 5 times the number of books Man Ray’s photos are in. If Man Ray’s photos are in 4 books, then how many books contain Battina’s photos?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Laika was the first living animal to be launched into orbit. She was chosen from a pool of 10 dogs, and 1 other dog was chosen as an alternate for the launch. How many possible combinations of flight dogs and flight dog alternates were there?

Grades 3 and 4:   A much better result this past week of attempting to successfully solve the problem. Grades 5 and 6:   A much improved performance this past week of tackling the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Kiki successfully solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Well done Kiki now come and choose a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem was Allie, Finley, Vincent, Liam and Rida who all receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.
