Taylor

Bulger
I’m an elementary music teacher in Edmonton. Though I’m teaching music, I have always enjoyed math since I was a child (and music uses math too!). I would like to share my enthusiasm and understanding of math with every student in our program. I hope that students will look forward to going to their regular math classes with confidence after enrolling here. How far have you gone in your math studies: I completed Math 31 (Calculus) and Pure Math 30 (grade 12) in high school and Linear Algebra I at the University of Alberta. GET TO KNOW TAYLOR: If you were a cartoon, which would you be and why? I’ll choose Spongebob, because that was one of my favorite shows as a kid and I thought he was very funny. What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten? I tried eating deep fried ice cream. I didn’t know that I was possible to make until I tried it. What do you do to have fun? I like to run, play a variety of instruments including guitar, piano and some others. I love playing chess. What’s your biggest pet peave? The feeling of styrofoam. It’s a weird one! If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be? Lays dill pickle chips, my favorite snack! What’s your favorite “math” joke? What is Pythagoras’ favorite shape? “A square!” (Made that up myself!) I love Mathnasium because… Mathnasium allows me to use my own gifts in math to help others improve their own understanding. This place allows students to make connections to various math concepts and use what they already know and apply it to new topics. I believe this fosters understanding better than simple rote memorization.

What do you do to have fun? I play a lot of sports in my freetime, especially tennis and golf! What’s your biggest pet peeve? I don’t like when people chew loudly it freaks me out. If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be? Pepperoni pizza - a classic fast food. What’s your favorite “math” joke? What’s the best way to get a math tutor? An Add! I love Mathnasium because … Mathnasium presents an opportunity where I can help students grow and help them with the fundamentals of math. I have a Bachelor of Science Honors in Computer Science from the University of Alberta, graduating in December 2024. Throughout my studies, I’ve explored various topics, including machine learning, natural language processing, and database management. If I were a cartoon character, I’d be Tigger from Winnie the Pooh because I enjoy bringing energy and excitement wherever I go, since I like teasing people here and there. The weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten is beef tongue in a Mexican taco restaurant I went to, it was a bit too coarse and felt like I was swallowing a roasted finger haha. In my free time, I love playing soccer; it helps me stay active and it’s my childhood sport- my favourite player of all time is Mesut Ozil. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people don’t wash their hands after using the washroom, it’s pretty crazy to do if you ask me and it also risks more diseases for everyone else. If I could have an unlimited supply of anything, it would be sparkling water; it is an absolute must. My favourite tech joke is; Why don’t programmers like nature? Too many bugs! I enjoy working at Mathnasium because I’ve always enjoyed working on a place that acts as a learning experience, as well as one that encourages continuous growth and collaboration. The best thing that motivates me here is to see someone improve week on week with their math skills, which is one of the most foundational educational pillars a student can get, and helping them achieve it better and better is very cool to see because seeing progress in real time is amazing. Helping others with technical concepts is also a challenge in breaking things into easier concepts, but once they understand and I see them gain confidence in their skills its also something amazing to see.
