Still Counting on Fingers in 3rd Grade? Help Your Child Build Number Sense Over the Summer
Finger counting in 3rd grade? Learn what it signals, which skills to target, and how to build number sense before 4th grade.
For many elementary students, summer and math don't feel like they belong in the same sentence. But a Mathnasium session looks nothing like a classroom, and most kids (and their parents) are surprised by that from the very first visit.
Here is a look at what actually happens during a summer math tutoring session at Mathnasium and why students tend to leave in a better mood than when they arrived.
Mathnasium's summer math program provides a structured, personalized, and fun math learning environment for K-12 students at any skill level.
The program is tailored to each student’s learning style and needs and can focus on goals such as:
Mastering concepts that didn't click
Keeping up with grade-level expectations
Getting ahead before the next school year
Students work with specially trained instructors in a caring and engaging group environment, whether in-center or online.
The program helps them retain what they know, build on it, and start the fall with a solid math foundation and even a transformed relationship with the subject.

☀️ Summer Math Program at Mathnasium of Altadena
Summer break gives your child something the school year rarely does: time to slow down on a concept that never fully clicked.
With no classroom pacing to follow and no homework deadlines to meet, your child can work through concepts at a pace that actually fits them, focusing on genuinely understanding each concept before moving on.
According to a report by the educational research organization NWEA, math skills are typically the hardest hit by summer learning loss.
For elementary students, that loss tends to show up in the foundational skills that later math builds on.
Our summer sessions are designed to prevent that loss and keep your child moving ahead. The plan is built specifically around the student and what they need most right now.

The first visit starts with a diagnostic assessment, which allows us to get to know the student and understand their learning needs, goals, and style. The assessment is designed to feel more like a conversation than a test, and for elementary school students, it covers foundational concepts like:
basic problem-solving
Questions and activities are chosen to match your child's age and comfort level.
The assessment maps what your child already knows and identifies the specific knowledge gaps that need attention. This can explain why a concept from an earlier grade was never fully consolidated, and why newer material hasn't clicked the way it should.
The whole process takes between 60 and 90 minutes and includes a short oral and written evaluation.
Afterward, one of our instructors will walk you through the findings and talk through the next steps.
From those insights, we will build a personalized learning plan, and your child can begin sessions within a few days.
Every session at Mathnasium follows the same structure. That consistency is deliberate because familiarity reduces anxiety. This will allow your child to settle into the work faster each visit since they know what to expect.
Each element of the session is designed with one goal in mind: to make your child want to come back, even in the middle of summer.
Sessions open with a short, low-stakes activity to ease your child into math thinking.
This might be a:
number game
pattern puzzle
quick mental math exercise
The goal is to shift your child's mindset from "I have to do math" to "I'm already doing math, and it's fine."
That shift matters more in summer than at any other time of year. By the time the warm-up ends, they are already thinking mathematically and ready to work.

Mathnasium sessions often include games and hands-on activities that make math feel less like schoolwork and more like play.
Every session at Mathnasium is guided by the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach that has helped students build lasting math skills for decades.
Each session:
Builds on what your child already knows
Addresses knowledge gaps
Introduces new concepts in sequence
This works for students of all skill levels, whether your child needs to catch up, keep up, or get ahead.
Our caring, specially trained instructors work directly from your child’s personalized learning plan, using a mix of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques based on what works best for them.
For younger elementary students, instructors use plain, everyday language to work through core concepts like
Instructors guide the student through problems gradually, ensuring they truly understand the topic, adding new concepts in logical sequence, and moving at the pace they are comfortable with.
Your child will work through problems independently, with their instructor available to guide them as needed. The instructor checks their reasoning and uses mistakes as opportunities to deepen understanding.
Your child will get immediate feedback on how they are thinking, which helps them understand not just what went wrong but why.
Sessions end on a positive note.
We acknowledge all progress, no matter how big or small: not just a general "good job" but a clear statement of what your child worked through and where they moved forward.
Our students leave each session knowing exactly what they accomplished, which gives them something concrete to build on next time.
