Q: What is the first thing a new student would do upon entering Mathnasium?
A: New students are shown how to check in, find their binder, and grab the materials they need for the day (pencil, warm up, etc). Then, they are introduced to their instructor! We explain their binders, the session structure, and important places in the center like the restroom, water, and of course, the prize cabinet!
Q: What does the first session look like for new students?
A: We work on some math that's easily attainable to that student -- some type of cool mental math trick they can pick up easily so they start to feel GREAT immediately. We also leave time to work on homework!
Q: Have you seen a student’s attitude towards math change?
A: Yes! Steven was very anxious to start at Mathnasium. He used to hide behind his parents when they came in, and we had to coax him to sign in and get started. Within a couple of weeks, the door would fly open and we'd hear Steven shout "BYE MOM!" as he ran into the center to get started. That was my favorite transformation! Steven became a math rockstar!
Q: What do you wish students and parents knew before they brought their student to your center?
A: That math doesn't have to be scary! We make math not only fun, but approachable. Removing the dread from math does wonders for a student's morale, stress level, and confidence.
