Q: How do you know what kind of math students in your center/re need to be taught?
A: We have multiple ways to find the best methods that the student needs to work on! When they first come in the center, we provide a detailed assessment that covers the previous methods that they have seen/will see. After they have signed up and have been with the center for 3 months, we retest them on the questions they previously missed on that first assessment to see what needs to be updated, or even re-added into the curriculum! I have to say my 2 favorite ways that we find the needed methodology is from the students themselves or even their teachers!
Q: Why do students need to take tests?
A: We have our students take their beginning assessment to see where their understanding is. We do progress checks to make sure that the students are mastering and retaining information from the chapters that they have been working on with us. We also have them test at the end of their chapters with a mastery check. If they don't reach the needed score to pass, we re-add the curriculum in their learning plan to later on revisit the chapters they need additional help with. For example, one of my students, Samuel works through his prescribed chapters really fast, and always scores very well once he understands the topic in front of him! He was almost done with his learning plan, and we decided to assess where his understanding was. He ended up scoring out of his Algebra learning plan, and was able to start his new learning plan for Geometry!
Q: Can Mathnasium help students prepare for their tests in math class?
A: Yes we can! Our goal is to help you student master methodology! We do recommend to have the student start with enough time ahead of the test to improve their mastery of the subject, which can vary depending on how the student works with their curriculum. My student Ayden was worried about his grade for an upcoming placement test for his new school this year. We went through the curriculum he had to study, and I was able to give him some chapters that helped focus on the methods he was struggling with. Afterwards, he came in and thanked me saying that the test was a lot easier since we covered some of the topics he was struggling with!
Q: What about College Placement Tests?
A: We help students master the understanding of the topics that they will cover on the placement tests! A previous student of ours, Malena, took the SAT for her senior year. Previously, she scored really low on the PSAT's and her mom was worried about the scoring. After a few months of working on the curriculum she brought in (her SAT study guide) and us solidifying her understanding on the topics she was struggling with, she was able to score over 150 points higher than her last PSAT score!
