What Will My Child Learn at the Mathnasium Financial Literacy Workshops?

Our Financial Literacy Workshops are an experiential learning program where students learn by doing, not just listening. Every day is divided into three engaging phases that build confidence with money, decision-making, and financial responsibility.

Part I of the Day: Academic Part of the Day

  • Identify coins and bills and understand their values.
  • Practice counting money with real-world examples.
  • Compare prices to determine the better buy (e.g., 2 items for $3.25 or 5 items for $4.75?).
  • Order their own breakfast, lunch, and snacks using a daily budget.
  • Estimate the cost of everyday household expenses and compare their guesses to the actual costs.

If students return for multiple days, they may get to the following:

  • Calculate discounts and sales.
  • Read and understand basic bank statements.
  • Create and manage personal budgets.
  • Learn how spending choices affect savings.
  • Build more advanced budgeting and financial decision-making skills.
  • Apply everything learned through increasingly challenging real-life scenarios.

Part II of the Day: Risk & Reward Challenge

Students work in small teams of three during this exciting decision-making game.

  • Every student decides how much they are willing to risk.
  • Some students may risk everything for a larger reward.
  • Others may choose to play it safe and keep what they've earned.
  • There are no right or wrong answers—students experience firsthand how different financial decisions can lead to different outcomes.
  • Students learn about risk, reward, strategy, and making independent financial choices.

Phase III: Earn, Budget & Spend

Students put everything together in a realistic economy.

  • Earn a salary for completing activities.
  • Decide how to spend or save their money.
  • Purchase breakfast, lunch, and snacks from their budget.
  • Food choices are customized based on each student's preferences. We do not provide junk food unless it is brought from home.
  • Students love our daily trip next door to purchase their meals together—it makes budgeting feel real and fun!

What Parents Can Expect

  • At the end of the workshop, we'll meet with parents to review their child's work, decisions, and reactions to each activity.
  • You'll gain valuable insight into your child's financial thinking and decision-making skills.
  • We intentionally keep our groups very small so every student receives individualized attention while having fun.

Workshop Levels

We offer three Financial Literacy Levels, allowing students to continue building their financial knowledge over time. Typically it takes fives days to complete one level.

August Full-Week Workshop

⭐ This August session is the final opportunity to attend our full-week workshop.

Students attending the full week can expect to:

  • Complete Level I.

  • Begin Level II (depending on their pace and progress).

While we may offer single-day workshops in the future, a full week provides the best experience, allowing students enough time to build strong financial habits, complete an entire level, and fully experience our hands-on activities.

Our workshops are designed to make learning about money memorable, practical, and fun—giving children confidence they'll use for a lifetime.

If you are interested, you may fill out a Reserve Form to discuss dates and details.  After you fill out the reserve form, a representative will schedule a call to discuss details.  Once the workshops are confirmed and the number of days via a call, we will share a link for you to pay via online.

We are located at 322 N Broad Street corner of Callowhill near Vine Street. The workshops are from 9 - 3pm with flexbility in drop-off and pick up times. We understand parents are working and may need time to navigate the city traffic.
