Q1: What’s one way your center makes summer learning fun and engaging for students??
A: During the summer, since most kids don't have homework, we play math games. We have a different math game each day of the week and spend the last 15-20 minutes of the session playing games. This month, after the mastery check, kids shoot a basket to earn more stars. Those are added to our poster for our all center ice cream party.
Q2: What’s a moment this summer that reminded you why you love working with students?
A: During our chess hour on Fridays, we've had several kids tell us how they've always wanted to learn how to play chess. We are a few sessions in, and most of the kids have a handle on how the pieces move and are learning some beginning strategy.
Q3: Why do you think summer is such a powerful time for students to build math skills?
A: Summer is the perfect time because kids have so much unstructured time on their hands. They are so much more appreciative of the learning that is taking place. One of our students just expressed how far ahead he will be this coming school year!
