Mathnasium of Converse: Building Math Confidence That Lasts

Feb 15, 2026 | Converse

Q1: How does your Mathnasium center help students build confidence in math?

A1:
Building confidence comes with consistent practice which allows a student to see that although it can be hard, he will get better with good instruction. Having the understanding that even though he does not understand it yet, doesn't mean he will never understand. Once kids see that, it really allows them to take more risks.

Q2: What changes do you notice when students begin to understand math concepts instead of memorizing?

A2:
It is interesting to see how building confidence can seep into other areas outside of math. We have had kids who have started helping out more around the house, who started taking more risks out on the ballfield, who started asking questions in class, and just in general, could see different possibilities.

Q3: How do instructors support students when they feel stuck or discouraged?

A3:
Our instructors are great at supporting students who are discouraged since they get so much practice. We have an instructor who does 3D printing and awards a student with the most pages completed each hour. Other instructors offer praise and encouragement by helping students remember the last time they struggled and made it through. Sometimes, you just need someone to believe in you and to cheer you on.

Q4: Why do parents value confidence and understanding alongside improved math performance?

A4:
A parent always wants something better for her children. We almost always hear that the parent struggled with math and that she just does not want that same outcome for her child. It is so encouraging when she starts to see MAP growth, a teacher comment that the student is now turning in classwork, has improved grades, or that a student is even helping others now.
