Q1: How does your center make math fun and engaging for students?
A1: We are really excited about Pi Day coming up but we do lots of day-to-day celebrations. Right now, we are doing a Final Four competition. We've grouped kids into teams that align with the teams playing right now. Excited to see how this plays out this month!
Q2: What does Pi Day mean to your students and instructors?
A2: Fun! We put the binders away for the day and dive into everything Pi. Even our youngest of students have fun learning about Pi and can't wait until it finally shows up in their binder. We have a group of students who are working to memorize the most digits in Pi. That's just one of the many games we have planned for Pi Day.
Q3: How do celebrations help students feel more confident in math?
A3: Celebrations help students to see that math can be fun and is fun! Even playing math games becomes easier when you are more efficient with facts. It's very tangible. When math becomes more fun and easier, confidence grows right along with that.
Q4: Why is it important to show kids that math can be enjoyable?
A4: So many of our students have struggled for so long they do not see a single thing that is enjoyable about math. I love that we get the chance to change that! The first thing most parents and teachers notice is a confidence change. Students are more willing to ask questions and try on class work instead of making wild guesses, or just not turning the work in at all. We incorporate a lot of game play here at the center too. Slowly, they see that math can be fun!
