Maria Winckelmann Kirch was born February 25, 1670 in what is now Germany. She was an astronomer who worked closely with her husband making calendars - these calendars were not just lists of dates but included information on the the arrangement of sun, moon, and planets. Maria and her husband were partners in this work, but as she was a woman she was only ever recognized as an assistant. In fact, when her husband died, Maria was not allowed to take his place as a Royal Astronomer. THe Berlin Academy of Sciences hired a man much less qualified.
