Q1: What are some ways your center is helping students prepare for the school year - whether it’s refreshing core skills, boosting confidence, or tackling new grade-level content?
A: Some of our students are advancing to learn topics from their new school year. Other students are using the summer to catch up on topics they struggled with last year. Regardless of circumstance, all of our students have one thing in common: they are all working hard this summer so their math knowledge is refreshed and ready to go. After a few months without practice, we see math knowledge fade quickly, even with skills the student thought they learned well. At Mathnasium, our continual and repeated practice keeps these skills fresh and ready to go for the new school year!
Q2: Can you share a quick success story about a student who feels more ready for school after coming to your center?
A: One of our amazing students is going into 8th grade this year. Three years ago, he came to us and tested at a fourth grade level. Because of his hard work, he has advanced through our curriculum and has been working on 10th Grade Geometry with us since March. In the fall, he will even be taking Geometry early as an eighth grader! He's practiced so much this spring and summer, and he'll go in with an edge since he already knows about topics that would otherwise be brand-new this year!
Q3: What would you tell parents who are worried their child isn’t ready for math this school year?
A: I would recommend any uncertain parent to look up the standardized math benchmarks for both the upcoming grade and for the former grade of their child! A letter grade only tells a fraction of the story, so it helps to familiarize yourself both with what your child should have learned last year and what they should learn this year. Analyzing this compared to your child's current skillset can help establish a gauge for where your child is at.
Similarly, at Mathnasium, when a student first comes in, we do a checkup to establish their strengths and weaknesses. In order to build a customized learning plan and teach new skills, it's always important to establish a baseline for where the student is at now. If your child is struggling with math and you don't know where to start, Mathnasium's risk-free assessments help provide a strong foundation to work from. Whether a student is far ahead of their current grade or still struggling with the last few years of math, we at Mathnasium will always meet the student where they are at.
