Q1: How does your center make math fun and engaging for students?
A1: From little treats to big celebrations, we at Mathnasium of Mukilteo try to make every day a fun time to learn! Each and every day, students have the opportunities to challenge themselves on their worksheets and earn small rewards. Each page completed adds a stamp to the student's reward card. When students meet a certain page goal or complete a difficult topic, they can spin our spinning wheel for a reward. We also have a fun calendar with daily events and treats to keep students motivated. There are so many ways to earn reward cards to redeem various rewards, making every lesson a fun opportunity!
Q2: What does Pi Day mean to your students and instructors?
A2: Pi Day is a chance to celebrate math with something we can all enjoy! Pi can be a complicated topic, so Pi Day gives a chance to briefly introduce students to Pi in an unintimidating way. Having a treat and a chance to celebrate reminds us all that math doesn't have to be about struggling; it can also be about joy and excitement!
Q3: How do celebrations help students feel more confident in math?
A3: Most students have had at least one notable bad experience with math: a test they weren't prepared for, falling behind on a topic after being sick, or a teacher who didn't understand them. Many students have multiple of these experiences and can start to associate math with struggling and feeling unconfident. At Mathnasium, we try to celebrate both our students individually and math as a whole. It is so important to foster positive experiences with math and develop positive associations so that students can feel more empowered and confident.
Q4: Why is it important to show kids that math can be enjoyable?
A4: Kids are just starting to learn about the world, and their perspectives are malleable and easily influenced by their day-to-day experiences. When students only see math as tedious, difficult, or frustrating, their brains will adapt to treat math as a frustrating experience, before they have even opened their textbooks. It is so important to show that math can be easy to learn, fulfilling, and fun so that students can feel empowered from the start!
