Mathnasium of Mukilteo: Staying Consistent in Summer + Building Confidence

May 15, 2026 | Mukilteo

Q1: Why is it important for students to stay consistent with math during the summer?

A1:
The Summer Slide affects the best of us. Whether students are ahead or struggling a little to catch up, the average student still loses 1-2 months of learning over the summer. Continual practice, even a couple hours a week, helps keep math skills fresh so students are ready to tackle more advanced material when they return to school in the fall! School doesn't stop advancing, and neither should your student.

Q2: How does your center help students build confidence in math?

A2:
Many students have a bad relationship with math, and generally, many factors contribute to this feeling over a long time. Day-to-day pressure, falling behind on a foundational topic, struggles with a teacher or particular class, and stressful nights of homework can all lead to students feeling insecure about math. At Mathnasium, we create positive personal experiences with math for our students. Our students work on math appropriate to their skill level, not just at the level of their grade. All the while, students have consistent support from the instructors. This ensures that students can build math skills and try new topics without fear of a bad grade or a disappointed teacher. As students build positive moments, experience, and associations with math, they feel more confident and empowered in their work.

Q3: What changes do you typically see in students after a few weeks of learning?

A3:
The first change we see is usually the confidence and a more positive attitude towards math. Students who would previously shut down for homework feel more capable to work on their own or with some external help. Over the following months, students typically feel more independent, participate more in class, and begin to use new strategies in their schoolwork. Many students, especially those who bring in their own classwork, also see an improvement in their school grades.
