Mathnasium of Mukilteo: Building Math Confidence That Lasts

Feb 15, 2026 | Mukilteo

Q1: How does your Mathnasium center help students build confidence in math?

A1:
At the Mathnasium of Mukilteo, our top priority is helping students feel supported in math. There is no such thing as a stupid question, and our instructors make sure to take all questions seriously. We use these moments as confidence-boosters and learning opportunities for the students. We reassure our students that they did the right thing in asking for help when needed, and then we provide them the necessary tools and instruction so they are able to work independently moving forward. This helps prove to the students that they can understand new concepts and apply them on their own when they have the necessary support.

Q2: What changes do you notice when students begin to understand math concepts instead of memorizing?

A2:
The students start looking forward instead of sideways and backwards. When students are just trying to memorize, they are trying to cram in knowledge they were once expected to master. They can only answer those questions and don't know how to find the answers when their memory fails. Students who truly understand math concepts and master number sense can instead apply their current knowledge to future topics. A student who truly understands the meaning of half for even numbers can infer half of odd numbers. A student who truly works to understand long division will someday easily extrapolate those concepts to decimal division and even synthetic division in Pre-Calculus. These students ask more questions, because they know their understanding is important. They are independently determined to learn, without requiring constant external pushes. Ultimately, a student who understands math concepts sets themselves up for math success for the future, not just the past or the present.

Q3: How do instructors support students when they feel stuck or discouraged?

A3:
Every instructor at Mathnasium was once a child learning, and thus, we keep the feelings of the student in mind every time we interact. Our instructors always prioritize a student in need. Every question is treated as a sincere moment to impart knowledge and prepare the student for success in this skill. Not only do we take it seriously when our students ask for help, but our instructors also go out of their way to help students who aren't confident enough to ask for help. No matter the situation, our instruction team is accessible, present, and active in ensuring every student has the proper support and does not have to struggle alone.

Q4: Why do parents value confidence and understanding alongside improved math performance?

A4:
When a student's math performance improves, that equates to a good grade for the year. This is great news, but math will continue to get harder the next year. On the other hand, when students feel confident and truly understand math, they stop being scared to try things. Homework stops being a battle. Students answer every question on a test, even if they aren't sure on the material. Students learn to ask questions unabashedly and trust that they can learn new skills if they put in the time and effort. Receiving an A in Algebra I is a wonderful feat, but that grade stops when the school year ends. If a student learns to overcome challenges, persevere, and trust themselves, that will carry on in every class they take, and long after they have finished school.
