As all of our students' work is done in the center (no extra math homework is sent home), parents often wonder how they will know what their child is working on at Mathnasium of Parker. There are four ways we communicate with parents regarding what their child is working on at our center.
1. Monthly Electronic Progress Report
This is a system created and implemented last year by our home office and education department in Los Angeles to encourage those business owners without an education background to communicate their students' progress with parents. Mathnasium of Parker sends these out monthly in the middle of the month (week's end of the week that includes the 15th of the month). For more information on how to read these reports, see below.
2. Printed Progress Report
We attempt to put together monthly (in an ideal world) written reports that include more personal commentary regarding your child's progress as well as examples of their completed Mastery Checks, Game Plans and print outs of assessment charts as appropriate. Our goal is to get these out monthly but that doesn't always happen for a variety of reasons including: a child working slower than expected; the center being busier than anticipated and just getting back logged. Children working slower than expected is typically the main culprit in not getting a monthly written report because we have a system in place to trigger reports after every 8 packets of work and after every partial and full post assessment. If, during the school year, a child spends more time on their math homework, they will not get as many packets completed. Children who have qualified to attend just once per week progress at a pace that is half as fast as the "average" student at Mathnasium or slower. Finally, children working on more challenging concepts (especially those who have not been in the Mathnasium program long) will proceed slower than "average."
3. In Person
You are ALWAYS welcome to make an appointment with us to review your child's binder and their progress. Also, feel free to speak with the instructors who worked with your child during their session for input regarding their progress and what they are working on.
Note: Private students do not have a Daily Tracker nor do they get monthly or written progress reports as they are typically working on their own material and curriculum, not Mathnasium curriculum. Parents of private students are welcome to discuss progress with your child's instructor or with the center director.
How To Read the Electronic Progress Report
At the top of your monthly electronic progress report, we include information about upcoming events, activities, holiday closures and other pertinent information.
Below that you will see your child's attendance for the past 3 months. To the right of attendance you will see skills your child has completed/mastered during the past 30 days.
Then you find the colorful section titled "Learning Plan Skills by Topic".
The large column to the left gives you the title of the topic/concept. This should correspond with the titles on the learning plan attached to your printed report. Then you have three colored columns: Not Yet Assigned, Currently Assigned, Mastery Achieved.
When your child is brand new to Mathnasium, there will be lots of dots in the Not Yet Assigned column and few dots in the Mastery Achieved column. As your child is assigned work (8 topics at a time) the dots will migrate from the yellow column to the blue column. Then as he or she completes packets of work and the corresponding Mastery Check, the dots move into the green column. When your child is nearing the end of their current learning plan, there will be no dots in the yellow column, few dots in the blue and most dots in the green column.
When your child completes a learning plan, they will take the full post assessment and we will generate a comparison chart showing the progress your child made from when they took the initial assessment to now. Then, we will administer the next level pre-assessment and create a new learning plan and the process repeats.
