Q: How do you know what kind of math students in your center/re need to be taught?
A: We start all of our students with a comprehensive math skills assessment. This lets us know what areas they have a good understanding in, and what areas they could use more practice. We use the assessment to build out their custom curriculum - focusing only on the areas where they need additional help. However, we know that many students come in feeling anxious about the assessment, so after they've been with us about a month, we do a second "partial assessment" on just the questions they originally missed. Many times, they are able to remove several topics from their learning plan from this second assessment. We like to recalibrate their curriculums about every 3 months to make sure that what they are working on is reflective of where they are.
Q: Why do students need to take tests?
A: Tests identify the strengths and weaknesses of a student's understanding. It also allows us to see the way kids think about the questions, and the ways they go about solving them. Often, we can show them simpler ways to solve the problem. After taking the time to work thoroughly on concepts, students feel much more confident and do better on their school tests.
