The warm, lazy days of summer will soon be upon us - or at least upon your children! You may be wondering what to do with your kids once school is out. Long, hot days filled with swimming, ice cream, video games, and way too much TV will confront you before long. Freedom from routine can feel liberating for a short time, but after a week or two many parents end up hearing the inevitable complaint, “I’m booored," and "There's nothing to do!" A little structure goes a long way towards keeping kids motivated and happy during the summer.
Are you trying to create a summer routine to keep your kids occupied and productive?
Many camps are available, but have you ever considered a summer math program? A summer math program at Mathnasium of Parker is a great complement to a summer camp. With our flexible, drop in hours in the morning and evening we can dovetail with just about any program you're considering for your child.
Every year you hear about the big push to keep your child reading for fun over the summer (don't forget to participate in the Jeffco Public Library's Summer Reading program), however, significantly fewer families worry about mathing over the summer!
Doing math for fun has been a critical oversight in U.S. education. At Mathnasium, we encourage kids to have fun while learning math. The great mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead spoke to heads of education in 1916 about the way math should be taught in school. Among the many important things he said was,
“From the very beginning of his education, the child should experience the joy of discovery.”
At Mathnasium of Parker, we couldn’t agree more. Math should be fun, but it is also a critical skill.
Why Should Your Child Participate in a Summer Math Program?
Many students lose critical math skills over the summer break. That is why, back in the day, the first 4-6 weeks of school were spent reviewing last year's curriculum - to make up for the summer learning loss. Now-a-days, there is not enough room in the school year or the math curriculum to have that luxury, so the school year starts off with a bang and just keeps going! Kids who have forgotten key concepts, start falling behind from the get go, and many get progressively more frustrated as the year progresses.
Why not keep your children current, help them get ahead, or even let them revisit difficult concepts they may have struggled with during the school year with a summer math program? Kids enrolled in the summer math program at Mathnasium of Parker not only have fun, they also go back to school with better math skills and increased math confidence.
Math programs are a great way to help your son or daughter reinforce their math skills and number sense. They also provide the opportunity to tackle concepts that were problematic for them. Remedial lessons can be reviewed in a non-threatening, fun and relaxed environment, without the pressure of grades.
For a child who requires advanced challenges, a summer math program can offer a specialized curriculum of higher-level topics tailored to their interests. Unlike a generic summer workbook you pick up on Amazon, a summer math program will meet the precise needs of your child because it is custom-designed specifically for them, and it's fun.
A summer math program will help your son or daughter with:
Learning retention
Mastering new skills
Reviewing difficult concepts
Boosting self-confidence
Gaining discipline
Enjoying math
The Mathnasium Math Program complements all types of summer camps as well!
STEM Camps
If your child will be enrolled in a STEM camp or STEM school program, a math program is the perfect addition. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM camps include topics such as nature and science, space, computer science, and robotics. These topics require students to be able to apply math skills and reasoning creatively. If your child understands the mathematical concepts behind the science, technology, and engineering at camp, they will have a more enjoyable experience and have more success at these camps. At Mathnasium of Parker, we will help your child be ready for a STEM camp. We recommend doing our summer sessions before the STEM camp, but we can also work with a child concurrently enrolled in a STEM camp. Your child will feel like a math rock star at camp!
Performing Arts and Visual Arts Camp
Children attending an artistic camp, such as drama, music, dance, or painting benefit from our summer sessions too. Our math program promotes creative thinking, problem solving, and discipline. These same skills lend themselves to the creative process necessary for successful art and design. Thinking outside of the box results in more unique, individualized artistic achievement. Mathematical concepts are often incorporated into artistic design to ensure structural stability and integrity. Because of this crossover, a summer math program combined with an art program offers a balance that allows math and art camps to complement each other well.
Math + Sports Camp = A Winning Combination
Many children take sports summer camps to hone their athletic skills. Studies show that exercise makes our minds sharper too. While they build stamina and strength in their body, use the benefits of exercise to sharpen their math brain by attending sessions at Mathnasium!
Multi-Activity Camps
Many camps provide campers with a well-rounded experience, with sports, crafts, and camping. An entire summer without focused goals, while great fun, may create a sense that something’s missing. The best summer math programs offer kids the opportunity to strive toward the goal of skill mastery. Kids earn a priceless sense of confidence, competence, and personal accomplishment when they pass a math mastery check. And that skill lasts well past when camp has ended.
Mathnasium Summer Sessions
The curriculum at Mathnasium focuses on using individualized instruction to build a strong number sense, whole and rational number problem solving, and number computation. We spend the time to help your child master the how and why behind math theory, fill in learning gaps, and boost confidence to ensure concrete mathematical reasoning skills. Mathnasium of Parker offers summer-long math sessions with flexible hours and specialized instructors to meet your child’s individualized needs. Both 5-week and 8-week packages are available, and to accommodate our families' travel and vacation schedules the weeks do not need to be used consecutively. However, once a package has started, all weeks must be used before the end of summer.
Students come in for 60 minutes 3, 4 or 5 days each week. Attendance is flexible and does not require scheduling, allowing the math program to conveniently work within your child’s summer calendar, including day camps and even resident camps. All learning and review is done at our facility in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
Our unique summer sessions will keep math skills sharp, build confidence, and address previous school year concerns in a no pressure environment that works with your schedule. We offer morning and afternoon learning blocks throughout the week.
