A Conversation with Aryana B, the First Member of Our 750 Attendance Club

Aryana B., a dedicated 7th grader, has been a part of Mathnasium of Roanoke since we opened in the fall of 2020, back when she was in 3rd grade. She recently achieved an incredible milestone—attending 750 sessions! We sat down with Aryana to talk about her journey and what Mathnasium means to her.

Q: How do you feel about being a part of the 750 Club?

Aryana: It’s exciting to be part of the 750 Club because it means I’ve learned a lot. I look back on my 750 sessions and realize how much I have grown—from learning about money to mastering the Pythagorean Theorem! Not only have I learned math, but I have made so many lifelong friends.

Q: What are some of your favorite things about Mathnasium?

Aryana: I like learning about things before I learn them at school, and whenever a teacher asks me how I know the answer, I tell them I learned it at Mathnasium! Mathnasium has unique teaching methods and fun rewards to keep kids excited, but my favorite things are my friends and the instructors.

Q: What do you have to say to kids who might react negatively to coming to Mathnasium 750 times?

Aryana: To be honest, when I started, it was embarrassing to have material below my grade level. But you should never be embarrassed—that’s just where you are in math, not how smart you are. No kid should feel bad about where they stand, and no one should judge others for what math they’re working on. For example, I’m working on Linear Equations now, but before I started, I reviewed division with and without decimals. When I struggle with something—whether it’s adding or multiplying 4-digit numbers—I’m never embarrassed. Everybody struggles with something!

Q: Lastly, what keeps you coming to Mathnasium?

Aryana:

1. My friends!

2. My sister, who is currently an instructor, has completed the program, and I want to follow in her footsteps and become an instructor, too.

3. The impact Mathnasium has had on me—ever since I started, my math grades haven’t dropped below 80%. I walk into my Mathnasium sessions not understanding my homework and walk out confident to take the test. My teachers introduce the topic, but Mathnasium helps me master it!
