Hello Roanoke families! As the 2025-2026 school year winds down, the Virginia Math SOL testing window (late April through May) is getting closer. We're also providing an overview of changes to the Math SOL assessments starting in the 2026-2027 school year. These include updates to the scoring scale, how results factor into final grades, the testing window, and proficiency cut scores.

Key Changes to Virginia Math SOL Assessments Beginning 2026-2027

• New 100-Point Scoring Scale — The previous 0-600 scale is replaced with a 100-point scale for easier interpretation alongside typical classroom grades.
• SOL Scores Count Toward Final Grades — For grades 7–12, Math SOL results (or approved local alternatives) will contribute at least 10% to the final course grade.
• End-of-Year Testing Window — Most end-of-course Math SOL tests (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) will shift to the final two weeks of the school year.
• Phased-In Higher Cut Scores — Passing thresholds will increase gradually over four years to align with the updated 2023 standards and national benchmarks (e.g., NAEP), with a temporary “Approaching” performance level counting as passing during the transition period (through 2028-2029).
