MATHNASIUM OF SHERMAN OAKS parent, John Hyden and his partner, Tri Bourne, won the bronze medal Sunday at the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals in Toronto, defeating Olympians Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk 2-0 (21-14, 22-20) on their home soil in the bronze-medal match.

It was the second victory by the 2015 AVP champions over the Canadians this week, as Hyden and Bourne downed Saxton and Schalk Thursday (21-17, 21-17) in pool play. It was the third win by the Americans in four meetings between the two teams.

Hyden and Bourne finished 16th in the Olympic qualification rankings earlier this year, but were unable to qualify for Rio with two U.S. teams ahead of them. Hyden, 43, would have become the oldest man to qualify for beach volleyball at an Olympic Games.

On Saturday, Bourne and Hyden emerged the victors (21-18, 21-19) over Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena in an all-American quarterfinal, but dropped a tough semifinal loss to Brazilian Pedro Solberg Salgado and Evandro Oliveira Jr. 21-19, 21-18. Solberg Salgado/Oliveira lost to fellow countrymen and Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt in Sunday’s gold-medal match.
