Q: How do you know what kind of math students in your center/re need to be taught?
A: When a student completes a learning plan, they take a post assessment that allows them to show off what skills they have learned. If there are any gaps shown in the post assessment, the student should review the topics they did not show a full understanding on. Assessments are a great tool to see what a student knows and what they need more help on. Mastery checks are like quizzes that test the student on specific topics to see if they have mastered it. It is another great tool to see how well a student understands a specific topic.
Q: Why do students need to take tests?
A: Tests, when utilized correctly, serve as feedback for math teachers and instructors to gauge the level of math skills internalized by their students. When tests are primarily used to assign value to students and their grades, both students and teachers receive diminishing benefits from "tests." This is why Mathnasium treats testing differently than most other institutions.
Q: Can Mathnasium help students prepare for their tests in math class?
A: JoJo was struggling with their end-of-semester calculus test. He came to our center, and we worked together to pinpoint the exact problems he was facing. We then broke down each concept, starting with simple examples, and gradually tackling more complex ones. When he took the test, he not only understood the material better, but he felt more confident!
Q: What about College Placement Tests?
A: Mathnasium serves as a great way to prep for college placement tests. The adjustable curriculum allows a student to target the concepts that need reinforcing while also working on familiar concepts. This helps the student feel prepared for their test taking.
