Q1: How does your Mathnasium center help students build confidence in math?
A1: Our Mathnasium center helps students build confidence by meeting them right where they are and helping them build missing skills, as well as, supporting them with topics they are currently encountering at school. We encourage them when they make mistakes and empower them to ask for extra topics they need practice in. Allowing them to contribute to their learning helps them build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and life.
Q2: What changes do you notice when students begin to understand math concepts instead of memorizing?
A2: When students begin to understand rather than just memorizing concepts or facts, we see their ability to problem-solve greatly increase. We often see students freeze when they rely on memorization- during tests, memorization goes out the window. When we equip students with the tools to solve problems and break them down, they are much less likely to freeze or panic. It helps them build their toolbox to attempt or even solve problems they might not have seen before.
Q3: How do instructors support students when they feel stuck or discouraged?
A3: Our instructors are great at building rapport with out students. When we get to build long lasting relationships with our students, we are better equipped to encourage them in a way that is productive for them. Some students respond well to encouraging words while other may prefer a quick brain break to reset. We support and encourage our students based on what makes them feel the most confident and ready to tackle the challenging problems.
Q4: Why do parents value confidence and understanding alongside improved math performance?
A4: Confidence and understanding empower students to work independently and make mistakes. By building confidence, we also build their ability to challenge themselves.
