Q1: How can students stay academically active during summer while still enjoying their break?
A1: Students can stay academically active during the summer while still enjoying the break by setting goals for themselves or gamifying learning. Practicing the multiplication and division skills with a card game or timing themselves can provide a fun way to keep their most recently gained skills sharp. At Mathnasium, we also have a lot of summer plans such as passports to reward students for attending, dress-up weeks, and fun-themed weeks to keep students engaged in play.
Q2: What are some ways math connects to sports like soccer or the Football World Cup?
A2: Math connects to sports in many ways. We use math when we track our favorite players' stats, we see it when players use geometry to see exactly where they need to kick to get the result they want, and we see it when we go to buy a ticket to see our favorite team.
Q3: Why is summer a valuable time for students to strengthen skills before the next school year?
A3: Summer is a great time to strengthen skills before the next school year because we can focus intently on any gaps a student may have. Since school is out and we have less homework, we have more time to focus on skills that need sharpening. Especially for students who want to improve their multiplication and division skills, this is a great time to really focus on learning strategies that can help them become more efficient and make the next school year easier.
Q4: How does your center help students stay confident, motivated, and prepared during the summer months?
A4: We help students stay confident, motivated, and prepared during the summer in so many ways. One of the most important is preventing the summer slide. When students return to school and realize they've forgotten how to do a good portion of their math, they become discouraged. By working on math over the summer those skills stay sharp, and they get to focus on skills that they need more sharpening.
