Word Problem Wednesday: Practicing Math With Money

May 9, 2017 | Westwood

Money, Money! Today’s Word Problem Wednesday taps into our everyday math skills to help us to find something we want to buy, account for sales and coupons, and use those smarts to budget our money correctly to get that thing! Maggie’s going to show us how it’s done… but let’s see if you can come up with the answer first. Oh, and don’t forget to come back tomorrow to see Maggie’s solution!

Maggie wants to buy a puzzle that costs $25. She has a 50% off coupon and $10. How much more money does Maggie need to get the puzzle?

Here's the solution: Half (or 50%) of $25 is $12.50. Maggie already has $10, so she needs $12.50 – $10 = $2.50 more.

Did your solution match ours? What is something you want to buy? Are there sale prices or coupons you could use to save money? Take what you’ve learned with today’s word problem and do the same thing for yourself!
