Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is FAST?

Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a statewide progress monitoring assessment designed to track student development throughout the school year.

    The FAST assesses:

    • Reading for students in Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) through grade 10

    • Mathematics for students in VPK through grade 8

Unlike a traditional once-a-year test, FAST is administered three times per year to monitor students' academic progress and ensure they are meeting Florida's educational standards. This means families get a clearer, more up-to-date picture of how their child is progressing throughout the year, not just at the end of it.

  • In which grades do students take the FAST math test?

FAST Math assessments are given to students in Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) through grade 8.

Because the assessments are given three times a year, any gaps in a student's understanding tend to show up early and often. This also means there are multiple opportunities throughout the year to make progress and demonstrate growth.

  • When does the FAST math test happen?

Students take the FAST math test three times per year: typically in the fall, winter, and spring. Schools schedule their own testing days within each window so exact dates can vary by district.

Because FAST is ongoing throughout the year rather than a single spring event, consistent math support at any point in the school year can make a meaningful difference in how a student performs at the next assessment.

  • What kind of math is tested on FAST?

FAST Math is aligned to Florida's B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Standards, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:

    • Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)

    • Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning

    • Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking

    • Geometry and measurement

    • Data analysis and probability

Students also need to be ready to apply their skills to multi-step problems in addition to answering straightforward computation questions.

Mathnasium learning centers in Florida can cover every topic a student may encounter on the FAST math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.

  • What types of scores are provided in FAST?

Achievement levels in the FAST range from Level 1 to Level 5. A Level 3 score signifies that students are performing at grade level.

Score reports can help families understand not just where a student landed, but which specific skills need more attention. That kind of detail is exactly what Mathnasium uses to build a personalized learning plan that targets the right concepts at the right time.

  • How do FAST scores affect students in Florida?

FAST test scores are primarily for informational purposes, helping to identify areas where students might need additional instruction and support.

While these results guide instructional adjustments and support, the final exam at the end of the year provides a summative score to assess overall mastery of grade-level content standards and readiness for the next grade.

  • How does Mathnasium prepare students for FAST math?

Mathnasium’s FAST math tutoring focuses on the math concepts students will encounter on the FAST exam.

We use a proprietary teaching approach called the Mathnasium Method™ designed to help students excel at math. Using our approach, Mathnasium tutors work with students to bridge their knowledge gaps and add new concepts in sequence, helping them truly understand and master FAST math and build the skills they will need to score well on the exam.

As many as 90% of students have reported improved academic performance after enrolling at Mathnasium.

  • What teaching method does Mathnasium use to help students prepare for the FAST?

Mathnasium’s FAST math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students truly understand and enjoy math. The Mathnasium Method™ fosters math mastery by:

    • Using personalized learning plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.

    • Building on existing knowledge: Our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. Adding new concepts in sequence, we work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

    • Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.

  • How do you prepare students who are behind in math?

Students who feel behind in math are usually held back by a few missing skills that are making grade-level questions feel harder than they should. This is where we start and build from.

Every student begins their Mathnasium experience with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:

    • (Re)builds missing foundational skills step by step

    • Strengthens grade-level understanding aligned to Florida's B.E.S.T. Standards

    • Builds confidence with the kinds of multi-step problems students will see on FAST

Because FAST is given three times a year, there is always an upcoming opportunity to show growth. Our goal is to make sure students are ready for it.

  • How do you prepare students with math test anxiety?

Math test anxiety usually comes from uncertainty about what to do next or worry about getting stuck. At Mathnasium, we address the skill gaps, rebuild or reinforce the math foundations, and help the student build confidence, step by step.

    We help anxious test-takers by:

    • Filling knowledge gaps so each assessment feels more manageable

    • Practicing FAST-style problems in a calm, supportive setting

    • Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers

    • Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day

With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident heading into each FAST window.

  • Is there any difference between Mathnasium’s online and in-center FAST math tutoring?

No, there isn’t. Students who choose to attend Mathnasium online will receive the same quality of live, face-to-face instruction and even work with the same tutors they would meet at their local learning center.

  • What kind of assessment is necessary to enroll at Mathnasium?

To start their Mathnasium enrollment, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.

We use assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals.

  • How often should my student attend math sessions to prepare for the FAST?

Typically, we recommend 2 to 3 sixty-minute sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.

We recommend starting the FAST math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.

  • How can I enroll my student for math tutoring at Mathnasium?

Getting started with the FAST math tutoring at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:

    1. Find a location. Contact your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.

    2. Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.

    3. Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
