TCAP, or the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, is an annual statewide standardized testing system used to measure how well students are mastering the Tennessee Academic Standards. The TCAP program includes grade-level assessments and high school End-of-Course (EOC) exams.
The program evaluates students in:
English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science for grades 3-8
Social studies for grades 6-8
The math portion of TCAP is designed to assess more than quick recall, emphasizing conceptual understanding, number sense, fluency, and problem solving.
In Tennessee, TCAP Achievement math assessments are required for grades 3-8. The state also offers a Grade 2 TCAP math assessment, but participation is a district option.
For high school, students may take TCAP End-of-Course (EOC) math assessments when enrolled in courses such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Integrated Math I–III. EOCs are tied to course completion, so a student may take an EOC earlier or later based on their course pathway and schedule.
TCAP math testing typically takes place in the spring, with districts selecting specific test dates within the state’s testing window.
TCAP EOC testing can also occur in a fall window (often used by block schedules), in addition to the spring window. Because schools choose the exact test days within the window, it helps to check your school’s calendar early.
TCAP math is aligned to the Tennessee Academic Standards, so the exact topics depend on the student’s grade (or course for EOCs).
In general, students can expect questions that assess skills, such as:
Number sense and operations
Fractions, decimals, and percents
Algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis and probability
Students also need to be ready for how the test is structured. For example, Tennessee notes the math assessment is administered in three subparts, and the first subpart is without a calculator.
Mathnasium Learning Centers in Tennessee can cover all of the content areas TCAP assesses, then focus extra time on the specific skills each student needs most.
TCAP math uses a scale score. The lowest obtainable scale score is 200, and the highest obtainable scale score is 450.
Students also receive a performance level (Levels 1-4), which helps families understand what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery and readiness.
TCAP scores serve to evaluate students’ mastery of core subjects. In Tennessee, TCAP scores, including math scores, can affect students in several ways:
School grades: Scores impact the school’s accountability ratings.
Promotion and support: They assess whether students meet grade-level standards, helping identify those needing extra support.
Individual progress: Detailed score reports assist parents and educators in monitoring each student's academic strengths and areas that require improvement.
Schools typically consider multiple measures (classwork, teacher feedback, benchmarks) alongside state testing when making instructional decisions, so TCAP is best viewed as one important data point.
Mathnasium offers comprehensive TCAP math tutoring to help students build the skills and confidence they need to excel on the TCAP math test.
We start with a diagnostic assessment, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets grade-level (or course-level) expectations. Students strengthen foundational skills, practice multi-step reasoning, and learn how to approach common TCAP question formats step by step.
When helpful, we also build test habits like showing work clearly, checking answers efficiently, and staying steady through longer problems.
Mathnasium’s TCAP math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students reach math mastery. The Mathnasium Method™ includes:
Personalized assessment and learning plans: We start by assessing each student’s current skill level, identifying strengths and knowledge gaps specific to TCAP requirements.
Building on existing knowledge: Our personalized learning plans start with what the student already knows, helping them bridge their knowledge gaps and leverage strengths.
Math that makes sense: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, using a variety of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence.
This approach supports both classroom success and stronger performance on multi-step TCAP problems.
When a student feels behind, it usually means there are skill gaps that make grade-level questions harder than they should be. We start with a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint what they know and what they’ve missed.
From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Rebuilds prerequisite skills step by step
Strengthens grade-level expectations connected to the Tennessee standards
Practices multi-step, TCAP-style problems so students learn how to show their thinking
Our goal is to help students truly understand how math works so they can approach TCAP questions with confidence.

Test anxiety often comes from uncertainty and low confidence. We address both by building a steady routine and clear plan.
Mathnasium helps anxious test takers by:
Breaking big topics into manageable steps, so progress feels real
Using guided practice that slowly increases challenge without overwhelming students
Teaching practical strategies like pacing, checking work, and what to do when they get stuck
Giving students repeated exposure to TCAP-style questions so the format feels familiar
With face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students develop a calm mindset that makes a big difference on test day.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online TCAP math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.
To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their math knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put your student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals such as excelling on the TCAP exam.
Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
Starting early gives students time to rebuild foundations and develop steady confidence. As the testing window gets closer, some students benefit from a short-term increase in sessions to build momentum and reduce last-minute stress.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
Find a location. Reach out to your nearest learning center, even if your student will be learning online.
Schedule an assessment. Our diagnostic skills assessment helps us create a customized learning plan for your student.
Book your sessions. Your local Center Director can guide you and your student in setting up a tutoring schedule.
