The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) is an annual statewide testing program designed to measure students' knowledge and skills in key academic subjects.
The LEAP assesses students’ proficiency in:
English language arts (ELA) for grades 3-8
Mathematics for grades 3-8
Science for grades 3-8
Social studies for grades 3-8
LEAP results help schools, families, and educators understand whether students are meeting grade-level expectations and where additional support may be helpful going forward.
Students in Louisiana take the LEAP 2025 math test annually in grades 3 through 8. In high school, math testing shifts to End-of-Course (EOC) exams taken after completing the corresponding course. To graduate, students must pass at least one of the following math EOC assessments:
Algebra I
Geometry
We recommend checking with your school for exact testing dates, as districts schedule their own days within the state's testing window.
Although exact dates may vary by district, students typically take the LEAP math test during the spring testing window, as scheduled by the Louisiana Department of Education.
We recommend checking your school's calendar as testing approaches and starting math tutoring early enough to allow your student time to build skills steadily, without last-minute pressure.
LEAP Math is aligned to Louisiana Student Standards for Mathematics, so the content reflects what students are expected to know and be able to do at their specific grade level. Depending on the grade, topics can include:
Number sense and operations (including fractions and decimals)
Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
Expressions, equations, and algebraic thinking
Geometry and measurement
Data analysis, statistics, and probability
Students also need to be ready for multi-step problems that ask them to apply and explain their thinking, not just recall facts or follow familiar procedures.
Mathnasium learning centers in Louisiana can cover every topic a student may encounter on the LEAP math test. We start with a diagnostic assessment to understand where your child is right now, then our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that targets the specific skills they need most and builds toward grade-level confidence step by step.
LEAP Math results are reported using scale scores and performance levels. Scale scores range from 650 to 850 depending on the grade level. Students also receive a performance level: Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic, Mastery, or Advanced, which helps explain what the score means in terms of grade-level mastery.
The skill-area breakdown on score reports is often the most useful piece for families, as it shows where a student is strong and where targeted support could make a meaningful difference.
LEAP scores show students’ mastery of core subjects. In Louisiana, LEAP scores, including math scores, can affect the students’:
School grades and transfers: Scores impact school report card grades and can influence students' ability to transfer schools.
Progress and support: Detailed score reports help parents and educators monitor each student's strengths and areas for improvement relative to grade-level standards and identify students who may need additional academic support.
Mathnasium tutors help students build the skills and confidence they need to excel on the LEAP math test.
In our LEAP math tutoring sessions, we break down challenging concepts into manageable steps using a variety of interactive teaching techniques. Our caring tutors work to fill in any gaps in students' knowledge, empowering them to truly understand and enjoy math. We also focus on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success on the LEAP and other standardized math tests.
Mathnasium’s LEAP math tutors use the Mathnasium Method™, our proprietary teaching approach designed to help students unlock their math potential.
The Mathnasium Method™ promotes math mastery by:
Using personalized learning plans: Using assessment-based insights, we create personalized learning plans that will put each student on the best path to math mastery.
Building on existing knowledge: Guided by the personalized learning plan, our tutors start with what the student already knows to help them bridge their knowledge gaps and develop solid foundations for math mastery. We introduce new concepts in a logical sequence and work with students to increase their knowledge level by level while enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Teaching for understanding: We teach math in a way that makes sense to the student, employing a range of mental, visual, verbal, tactile, and written techniques to help them master any math concept.
Every student who feels behind in math has a story and it usually starts with one concept that didn't fully click and quietly made everything after it harder. At Mathnasium, we listen to that story and trace it back to where things went off track.
Every student begins their Mathnasium journey with a diagnostic assessment. From there, our tutors follow a personalized learning plan that:
Uncovers and addresses the foundational gaps that are holding the student back
Builds grade-level understanding aligned to Louisiana Student Standards for Mathematics
Develops the problem-solving skills needed for the multi-step questions students will encounter on LEAP
We focus on building deep understanding because students who truly grasp the math are ready for whatever the test puts in front of them.
Math anxiety may be more common than you think, with as many as 30% of K-12 students reporting it, and the feeling tends to peak right when it matters most. At Mathnasium, we address both the skill gaps and the confidence gaps that drive that feeling.
We help anxious test-takers by:
Filling knowledge gaps so the test feels more manageable
Practicing LEAP-style problems in a calm, supportive setting
Teaching simple strategies for starting tough problems, organizing work, and checking answers
Building familiarity with common question formats so fewer problems feel surprising on test day
With consistent sessions and face-to-face guidance in a caring and fun environment, students start to feel calmer and more confident as the LEAP testing window approaches.
No, there is no difference between our in-center and online LEAP math tutoring. Our live, face-to-face online sessions are even led by the same tutors you would meet at your closest Mathnasium Learning Center.
To start their Mathnasium journey, students take part in a diagnostic assessment which allows us to identify their knowledge gaps and strengths.
We use the assessment-based insights to create a personalized learning plan that will put each student on the best path towards achieving their academic goals such as excelling on the LEAP math exam.
Usually, we recommend 2 to 3 math tutoring sessions per week. However, our tutors may suggest a different frequency of sessions based on each student’s specific goals and needs.
We recommend starting the LEAP math tutoring early to allow the student enough time to learn and master the math concepts they'll face on the test.
Enrolling your student at Mathnasium is as easy as one-two-three:
