The aim of TIMSS (The Trends in Mathematics and Science Study) is to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and science around the world. Every four years, it provides internationally comparable, rigorous, and reliable data about student achievement and learning contexts.

TIMSS has been carried out every four years since 1995. The latest report, TIMSS 2019 results, just released this month.

Unfortunately, there is no improvement in Canada’s position, both in Math and Science for grade 4 students. In 2015, Canada’s average scale score in Math was 511 and now 512. In Science, it was 525 in 2015 and now 523.

Alberta’s mean score for math, regrettably, is only 490 – below the International Benchmark of 500, and below other provinces like Ontario & Quebec. But in Science, Alberta scores the highest!
