Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Kaan is playing with a group of numbers. What is the largest whole number that Kaan can make with the following digits {7, 9, 0, 3, 1, 4}? Write the number in word form.

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Nimil decided to order a pizza for dinner. He ordered one large pizza for $24. Nimil ate 3 slices of pizza. Dishant ate 2 slices of pizza. Poor Meet came home late and there was only 1 slice left for him. If each person must contribute their fair share of money based on the number of slices they ate, how much money will Nimil, Dishant, and Meet have to pay?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  A circular pizza has a radius of 14cm. Millie wants to cut herself a nice big piece with an angle of 90º. Find the perimeter of Millie’s slice of pizza that she cut.

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Pierce has 20 coins consisting only of dimes and quarters. If the dimes were quarters and the quarters were dimes, Pierce would have    90 cents more than he has now. How many dimes and quarters does Pierce currently have?

Grades 3 and 4:   A very limited week of successfully solving the problem presented at this grade - careful reading was an issue.  Anthony was the only one to solved the problem. Grades 5 and 6:  Another great week of participation this past week as everyone worked hard on solving the problem!  Kaz solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Kaz!  Also solving the problem was Liam K., Scarlett, Yousif, Azmiyah, Mary and Dale and they will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:  A better week dealing with the problem this past week at this grade level.  Lucy solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Great work Lucy, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card that you like.  Also solving the problem was Henry, Nixon, Garvit, Amelia R. and Amy who will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.
