Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Kylie sold books at a yard sale for 10¢ each and toys for 50¢ each. If she sells 6 books and 3 toys, how much does Kylie earn altogether?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Eight groups of children are performing skits at their summer camp comedy show. Each skit is 5 minutes long. If each group performs once and the campers must be done with the comedy show by 9:15 PM, then what is the latest time they can start the show?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  A 27-decimetre tree casts a 18-decimetre shadow. Cameron’s dog casts a 6-decimetre shadow. Cameron is twice as tall as the dog. How tall is Cameron?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  The profit earned by a coffee company, measured in thousands of dollars, is modeled by the function f(t) = t2 – 8t + 16, wherein “t” is measured in months and t = 1 is January 2012. What month does the coffee company earn the least amount of money? How much do they earn?

LAST WEEK WINNERS OF PROBLEM OF THE WEEK:

Grades 5 and 6:   Another difficult task this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Casey correctly solved the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Casey!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   Another difficult week of attempting to solve the problem last week at this grade level.  Aarya correctly solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Fantastic $10 Gift Card of her choice.  Also solving the problem was Kaelan who will receive "extra punches" on his Reward Card.  Everyone try again this week.   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
