Problem of the Week for August 24th to August 28th

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Friday afternoon (1:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  In Mrs. Olson’s first grade class, math lessons start at 1:05 PM and end 65 minutes later. At what time are Mrs. Olson’s math lessons over?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Matthew learns in history class that British Columbia had a provincial election in 1996, the next election happened in 2001, and the rest happened every 4 years since then. How many provincial elections will happen in British Columbia from 1996 to 2225?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Jack’s science homework is to measure the temperature outside at 7PM each day for a week. On Monday, his thermometer reads 77°F, but his homework asks for the temperature in Celsius. Since the temperature in Celsius is equal to five-ninths of 32 less than the quantity of the temperature in Fahrenheit, what should Jack write down on his homework?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  One half of Hailey’s overall English grade comes from test scores. One fifth of her grade comes from quizzes. Another fifth comes from homework. The rest comes from classroom participation. If Hailey has an average test score of 92%, an average quiz score of 80%, an average homework score of 75%, and a classroom participation score of 100%, what is her overall grade as a percentage?

Grades 5 and 6:   A little better result this past week of tackling the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Liam successfully solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Well done Liam now come and choose a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem was Kiyan and Aiden who will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Great work everyone.   Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!
