Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Renas is celebrating her 11th Birthday with some of her family members of all different ages. Her younger brother is 7 years old, her older brother is 15 years old, her father is 51 years old, her mother is 47 years old, her grandfather is 87 years old, and her grandmother is 78 years old. Out of all the people at the birthday party, who’s age is a Prime Number?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  The outside temperature in Calgary on one summer day was 63oF. Helena came up with an app on her phone that will advise her of outfit recommendations for the day based on the temperature outside. However, the app only accepts the temperature in Kelvin units as input. Find the Kelvin measurement of the outside temperature in Calgary. (Round your answer to the nearest whole degree).          C = (F – 32) x  5/9                     K = C + 273.15    

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Carolina has a pet dragon that has a treasure hoard made up of gold and silver coins. Originally 60% of the hoard was gold coins. One day, the dragon steals 200 more silver coins to add to his hoard, and now the hoard is made up of 50% gold. How many coins were there in the hoard before the dragon stole the silver coins?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Luowei is thinking of a two-digit number. The sum of the digits of the two-digit number is 12. When the digits are reversed, the new number is 36 more than the original number. Find the number.

Grades 5 and 6:  A great week of participation this past week as everyone worked hard on solving the problem!  TWO WINNERS were declare with Charlie and Daimon correctly solving the problem and were the first two correct ballots to be drawn and they each win a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of their choice. Well done Charlie and Daimon!  Also solving the problem was Brianna C., Eva, Teng, Kaz, Maya, Mara, Britton and Japnoor and they will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 9 and above:   Another tough week attempting to deal with the problem posed this past week for our Mathletes.  Drazen managed to solve the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Fantastic work Drazen, now come and choose an Awesome $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Sam also solved the problem and he will receive "extra punches" on his Reward Card.
