Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!
Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: The world record for the greatest number of hula hoops spun at the same time is held by Marawa Ibrahim from Australia. She can spin 200 hula hoops at once. If Aria can spin 150 hula hoops right now, how many more does she need to spin to break the world record?
Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: The record for the largest pizza was broken when a restaurant called NIPfood made a pizza that was 1260 square metres in area. If that pizza were cut in half, then each piece were cut in half, then each piece were cut in half again, over and over, until the pieces had been halved 10 times, how many pieces would there be?
Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: There are 2700 residents of Casey, Illinois, home of the world’s largest mailbox. The mailbox is so big that a group of people can stand inside it. If there are 135 people standing inside the mailbox, what percentage of the population of Casey is in the mailbox?
Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: Sweet Pea the dog holds the world record for the fastest 100 metres walked with a can balanced on her head. (Seriously.) She traveled the 100 metres in 2 minutes and 55 seconds. What was Sweet Pea’s average speed measured in metres per second?

Grades 5 and 6: Another difficult task this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem! Liam (again) correctly solved the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Liam! Grades 7 and 8: A bit better week of attempting to solve the problem last week at this grade level.
