Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Michael’s soccer team is having a bake sale. They bake 2 each of 3 kinds of pie, then cut each pie into 8 slices. How many slices of pie can Michael’s soccer team sell at their bake sale?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Katie is comparing the prices of 4 different pies. A cherry pie costs $6.00. A chocolate cream pie costs $11.00. A blueberry pie costs $7.00. A peach pie costs the average price of all 4 of the pies. How much does the peach pie cost?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Daniel orders a pumpkin pie from a bakery. The pie costs $16.60. He tips the baker 15% rounded up to the next dollar. By how much money does Daniel round the tip?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Soren and his family share a lemon meringue pie that weighs 2 kilograms. Soren takes a slice whose angle measures 40°. How much does the remaining pie weigh?

LAST WEEK WINNERS OF PROBLEM OF THE WEEK:

Grades 3 and 4:   A better week of striving to successfully solve the problem presented at this grade.  Emilia successfully solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Well done Emilia, now come and choose a Fabulous $10 Gift Card of your choice.  Also solving the problem was Nickan, Aiden, Kiki and Allie and each will receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone try again this week!   Come on, give your brain a workout!

Grades 5 and 6:  Another struggle this past week but there was a bit more participation as everyone worked hard on solving the problem!  Luoran correctly solving the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Luoran!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:  A bit of a struggle striving to successfully solve the problem presented at this grade.  Layane successfully solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Well done Layane, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card of your choice.  Also solving the problem was Bridget, Albert, Teng and Mannix and each will receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone try again this week!  Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
