1. What is the most common thing you see in new students coming to Mathnasium for the first time?
A: We normally see students come in being shy and nervous. Coming to a math tutoring center can be scary and probably isn't their idea of fun. That being said, once they feel the dynamics of the room, see the rewards, and hear other students laughing and having fun, they start to relax a little bit.
2. If there was one thing you could tell parents before they bring their student to Mathnasium what would it be?
A: I would tell parents that I genuinely think Mathnasium is the best way for your kids to learn math if they want to have fun as well. There is no better way to get your student excited about learning math than the Mathnasium system.
3. What things do the most successful students have in common?
A: The most successful students ask questions, are engaged, and genuinely try. If a student comes in with an open mindset and positive attitude, we can conquer whatever topic they're working on together!
4. What are some of the ways you teach math to your students?
A: If possible, I always try to use socratic questioning. When a student finishes a problem that way, they will understand the steps and concepts more fully because they led themselves to the answer.
5. What do you think is the coolest thing about Mathnasium?
A: I think the coolest thing about Mathnasium is the balance between providing work and fun. We want to change the perception of math so it is considered fun, not scary. I also really like that we ALWAYS take the time to explain things at each individual student's rate, which doesn't happen at school.
