Mathnasium of Cherry Hills's Top 5 Moments!

1. Our favorite “aha!” moment with a student.

A: One of my favorite "aha" moments was while working with a student on solving linear equations. She had been struggling in it at school so we were helping her while at Mathnasium, and after walking her through the steps and helping her think of it slightly differently, she sat back in her chair, looked at me and said, "Wait, that's it?" After that, she blew through the rest of problems all by herself!

2. A time when a student earned a reward.

A: We have a 1st grader who is VERY motivated by our rewards. We let students put items on hold as a kind of lay-away system before they can fully take them home. This student had put an RC car on hold and every day, when he came in and was picked up, he would tell his parents about it. He was always figuring out how many more cards he needed to get it and the day that he did finally get to take it home, he was jumping with excitement!

3. Positive parent experience.

A: We have a pair of siblings that enrolled at the same time. The older student jumped right in and did great right from the start. The younger one, not so much. The first couple of weeks, she struggled and would often argue but then one day, something clicked and she started enjoying coming and getting through a lot of material. Their mom sent me an email shortly after letting me know how much we had changed her younger daughter's outlook and that she had seen her confidence everywhere grow, not just in math. She was more positive and willing to try new things throughout her life!

4. Favorite ways to teach concepts.

A: My favorite ways to teach concepts is to illustrate the topic with drawing out pictures. Giving students a visual representation of how or why something works is a great way for students to remember it later!

5. A time when a student scored well on a test.

A: We had a student start with us who had never gotten an A on a math test and he fully believed he couldn't. After being with us for a while, his mom called and told us that he had come home with an A on his math test! It was a HUGE moment for him and his whole confidence in math and school. We were so proud of him for putting in the effort and not giving up!
